The breaking of the day has come
Gen 32:24 ASV - And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
Gen 32:25 ASV - And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him.
Gen 32:26 ASV - And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
Gen 32:27 ASV - And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
Gen 32:28 ASV - And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
Gen 32:29 ASV - And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Gen 32:30 ASV - And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for, [said he], I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
It says even to this day the Jews will not eat the sinew of the lamb in respect for the patriarch Jacob
In this verse we see that Jacob saw his life and how he lived it if you want to say he was repentant to the fact he did not trust God completely. He had a fear of God but not a clean fear. He believed God to an extent but he had not totally given his whole life to God. We see where God worked with him in every area of his life. Now please keep in mind the fact that we as children of God are living in the spirit world and Jacob was living in the natural world , people in that day lived unto their flesh. The old testament is a type and a shadow of the spiritual to come through Christ. We live not to our flesh any longer but through the spirit of God . We obey not our flesh any longer but the spirit that dwells in us. It is Christ in you the hope of glory , If you look closely at this story Jacob went from walking in his own desires, to getting alone with God at the river Jabbock, and Jabbock in the Heb means a pouring out. Jacob emptied himself of all that was in him , for us as children we must fall on the rock and be broken And we must pour ourselves out, surrender all that we are in this world. You see when Jacob came to this very place in his life he was in a corner he was boxed in and he saw no way out. He feared Esau and his men, he had just spent twenty years with Laban. Now twenty is a number of redemption,a time of waiting . Paul in his writing calls it a maturing, maturity of a man . All Jacob had amassed in those twenty years went on over the brook with his servants. Than his wife's and his children. He pushed everything he had ahead of himself. And he was alone ,do you think Jacob was a praying man to the point where he fell on his knees and said God its just you and I now I can run no farther I am at the end of my journey in this life. It is a wonderful story of repentance , and repentance is so abused in this day and time also the altar is abused ,the only altar we have as believers is the cross. And the cross is an instrument of suffering. It is to crucify the deeds of our flesh. Repent It simply means to change ones mind , it looks like to me Jacob has had a change of mind. But as you read on, his repentance was real because it produced fruit in his life. We can not fool God and think we can play games with God , That is why when I would go to a group of believers or an assembly of people claiming to know God . And yet the same people would come to the altar ever Sunday, and go through the motions of sorrow and brokenness, that sorrow is a working of death in them . Their is no fruit in a mans flesh only death, 2Cr 7:10 ASV - For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, [a repentance] which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death .Lets look at Jacob and the moment he was all alone . He set this up this very moment in his heart he was broken at this moment he was truly seeking God. His sorrow was generated by all the promises God had made to him , his being blessed by God over and over. He saw God in all this and his heart was broken. A Godly sorrow He finally come to a place of surrender. I want to bring out the spiritual aspect of the event as it occurred, Gen 32:1 ASV - And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. When he saw the angels of God he saw his whole life all that God had done for him. He said he went from nothing to a enormous family all because of God. Now his faith is going to be tested . 2Pe 1:19 ASV - And we have the word of prophecy [made] more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts: Jacob saw angels and the angels at that moment were a testimony of Gods love. But we have his very word as a testimony of his love for us in this very day. People in that day needed a sign to believe, our sign is Christ in you the hope of Glory we have his sure word living in us. Jacob was seeing all the wonderful blessing of God for him. And how God provided for him in it all. His outward blessing were abundant but the inward blessings were empty to the fact he worshiped God with his lips but his heart was far from him . This was a day of reckoning a show down with God . How many of us run from this place Jacob was in. When we feel God getting close to our hearts we move away. The time is coming where you will not be able to move away without leaving completely. A man came to Jacob , and Jacob called him God in the end. Gen 32:24 ASV - And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. A man it says Gen 32:25 ASV - And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him.
I want to recall another scripture that parallels this. Jdg 13:18 ASV - And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful? Was Jacob wrestling with Jesus, it says a man. I have left out a lot of things , the story is speaking to those that are in a situation of no more retreat , do not miss the Lord my friend in this hour. The word says he chasten those whom he loves and if you are being chasten by the lord, the only thing to do is surrender just like Jacob do not let go until God blesses you. Jacob was crippled in his body by God he limped the rest of his life as a testimony he was with God and he changed him. Now we are living in the spirit and God wants to change us spiritually he wants to bring us into his kingdom. God is putting in us, his heart of flesh he wants to write his word upon our hearts. Rom 8:14 ASV - For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God
Rom 8:19 ASV - For the earnest expectation of the creation waiteth for the revealing of the sons of God
Gal 3:26 ASV - For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus.
The word says that God changed his name to Israel, Gen 32:28 ASV - And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Israel in Heb is God prevails , Jacob it says had striven with God, and striven in the Heb , to persevere, contend with. Look it says with men and with God, men represents the world and all it has the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. And in the end with God there was only one way for Jacob and he realized it, he needed God . He changed his mind and prevailed over his flesh and God blessed him spiritually this time, and he was changed forever. One more lesson to see in this story, and that is to this very day the Jewish people in their religion they still will not eat the sinew of the Lamb as a reminder of Jacobs struggle at Jabbock. It says he saw the face of God and lived , Exd 12:5 ASV - Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old: ye shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats:
Exd 12:6 ASV - and ye shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at even.
Exd 12:7 ASV - And they shall take of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and on the lintel, upon the houses wherein they shall eat it.
Exd 12:8 ASV - And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
Exd 12:9 ASV - Eat not of it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roast with fire; its head with its legs and with the inwards thereof.
Exd 12:10 ASV - And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; but that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
It says you will eat the whole lamb consume the whole lamb. For he is our passover when the angel sees the blood he will pass you over . The Jewish people just like a lot of Gods called people today are not seeing the face of God . They cannot see Christ and live Col 1:27 ASV - to whom God was pleased to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: The letter of the law is what they are seeing, they can not see the spirit of the law of liberty the law of life everlasting. 2Cr 3:6 ASV - who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. Jhn 3:3 ASV - Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Jhn 3:4 ASV - Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Jhn 3:5 ASV - Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God!
Jhn 3:6 ASV - That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Jabbok is calling people out and it is the only way to the kingdom of God , Jhn 10:7 ASV - Jesus therefore said unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
Jhn 10:9 ASV - I am the door; by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and go out, and shall find pasture. Surrender you heart and your life to God and live. One last thought when it says that God touched Jacob in the hallow of his thigh , the word hallow is interesting to the fact it is speaking of Jacob laying down his life to God totally surrendering his whole life to God at that moment and that is where God touched him, in his surrender he crippled him for ever he changed Jacob for ever.
